Vietnam is going to build its first nuclear power plant by 2020 in order to meet the country's energy demands in the new century.
The Ministry of Industry and Electricity (EVN) have been carrying out a pre-feasibility study of the construction of the nuclear power plant, according to a report of local daily Vietnam News (VNS) on Friday.
Atomic energy would be crucial to meeting the country's energy demands in the coming century, particularly as the number of coal, oil and hydro-power options begins to diminish, VNS said.
Vietnam has the materials and locations to make the project work, according to the pre-feasibility study.
However, there are many objections to the plan, including concerns over safety, technology, management, the disposal of radioactive waste, production costs, local industry capacity and public opinion.
Therefore, a new and more measured pre-feasibility study is to be undertaken, although there is a lack of skilled and experienced scientists to carry it out.
To complete the feasibility study, Vietnam is looking for international assistance, and wants to recruit experienced atomic energy specialists, said VNS.
