Turpan has gradually become one of the most attractive scenic spots in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Boasting abundant historical and natural scenery as well as peculiar folk customs of the Uygur people, the main resident group in Xinjiang, Turpan enjoys a high reputation among travelers both at home and abroad.

Over 1.33 million domestic and overseas tourists visited the region last year, up 33 percent over 2000, local statistics show.

An investigation indicated that about 95 percent of visitors to Xinjiang choose Turpan as an indispensable destination.
