Woman soccer player Pu Wei, captain of the Chinese national team, joined in the Washington Freedom in the Women's United Soccer Accociation (WUSA) on Wednesday.
Freedom coach Jim Gabarra said that Pu, who started in the 1999 Women's World Cup final, is a tough and tireless two-way player who should provide a reliable link between a revamped defense and the forwards.
Pu, 21, signed for one year plus two one-year options and is expected to come to Washington when her work visa is finalized, and the Freedom will open its season on April 13 against the New York Power in Washington.
Also signed on Wednesday by the Freedom was 29-year-old German veteran defender Steffi Jones, who inked a two-year contract plus a one-year option.
The new signings by the Freedom was a major step toward retooling the team who finished seventh in the inaugural eight- team WUSA league.
