Powell: US Anxious to See Indo-Pak Dialogue
U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Thursday night in New Delhi said the Washington was " anxious" to see resumption of dialogue between India and Pakistan on all pending issues including Kashmir.
U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Thursday night in New Delhi said the Washington was " anxious" to see resumption of dialogue between India and Pakistan on all pending issues including Kashmir.
Powell expressed his hope that the standoff between New Delhi and Islamabad following the terrorist attack on Indian parliament last month would be resolved as "quickly as possible."
Addressing a news conference after his talks with Indian External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh shortly after his arrival here Thursday evening, Powell said the U.S. was willing to "stand by" the two countries to help resolve their bilateral problems.
Singh said India would respond adequately and effectively after seeing Pakistan's actions to combat terrorism on the ground.
Powell informed New Delhi that Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf had taken some steps and it was for India to judge whether these actions constituted a sufficient basis for them to change their policies regarding Pakistan.
Powell, who was accompanied by Singh at the news conference, said the question of Kashmir had to be resolved through "a direct dialogue" between India and Pakistan.
"U.S. is always ready to bring about a dialogue .... and is always ready to assist the two friends," he said.
