Keep High Vigilance on "Gradual Independence of Taiwan": Experts

To deal a counter-blow to a series of words and deeds said and done recently by the Taiwan Authority experts and scholars in Beijing on "Taiwan Issues" pointed out that the various ways and activities against the trends staged by the Taiwan Authority and splitists in Taiwan for "Taiwan Independence" have once again brought to daylight their sinister features in sticking stubbornly to the disruptive way of "inching towards Taiwan independence".

This will be sure to meet with resolute opposition of all Chinese nation including the compatriots in Taiwan Province. Nevertheless, we would like to offer a piece of advice that the Taiwan Authority should be clear about the situation and not to go too far along the impasse of "Taiwan Independence".

The Taiwan leader's approval of printing the word "Taiwan" onto the Taiwan people's traveling certificates, said Xin Qi, a famous scholar on Taiwan issues, is an important step in its promotion for "virtual Taiwan independence". When the leader of the Taiwan Authority came into power he has never for a moment slackened his disruptive activities in advocating the "Taiwan independence". However, he has made his way more hidden in doing it by paying more attention to "pushing it forward step by step", attempting to stage a big change out from minute changes and accumulating quantitative changes for a qualitative change in order to amass and strengthen disruptive forces for a eventual "Taiwan independence".

The wild activity adopted by the leader of the Taiwan Authority is because he thought that he was well supported by somebody in international arena, giving him hi-tech weapons and he also won a little more seats in the election of "Legislative Commission", pointed out Xin Qi. However, it is hoped that this leader won't misjudge the present situation and it will lead to no good to stir up strife across the strait. If he goes on like this he will get nowhere but onto the road farther away from peace. The move will do no good for the relations across the strait nor will it do any good for the people in Taiwan Island.

As to the "inching towards Taiwan independence" since the leader of the Taiwan Authority came to power, I have some comments to make here, said Li Jiaquan, researcher of the Research Institute of Taiwan Issues of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. What he is doing is first of all a "Soft Independence of Taiwan ", secondly a "Smiling Independence of Taiwan", thirdly a "Cultural Independence", fourthly a "Military Independence" and finally a "Virtual Independence of Taiwan". This time, he approved the notation of the word "Taiwan" onto the "Passport of the Republic of China", which means that he's deepening in essence the "independence of Taiwan", trying to make it "an actual state".

By citing many facts, Li Jiaquan said that the leader of the Taiwan Authority has long been premeditating on the "Taiwan Independence" and is now going farther and farther along the way. After his ascending to power he altered the new Taiwan dollar to so-called "national dollar", the southern Fujian dialects to "national language" and the Taiwan local opera to "national opera", and furthermore, he removed the map of China away from the "badge for the 'News Bureau'" and so on and so forth. A minute change indicates something crucial. The way the leader of the Taiwan Authority adopted for marching onto the road of "Taiwan Independence" is to accumulate little by little for a whole mass. The move has laid bare his out-and-out nature for "Taiwan Independence" and he is however more deceitful than Lee Teng-hui. Taking the sincerity for peace on the part of China's mainland for weakness he is reaching out for a yard after taking an inch. What is intolerable if this is tolerable!

As the leader of the Taiwan Authority announced that he's going to print the word "Taiwan" onto the traveling certificates of the Taiwan people, said Xu Bodong, dean of the Research Institute of Taiwan Issues of Beijing United University, the occurrence is by no means isolated and accidental. It is an important link in the chain of "virtual independence of Taiwan" as planned, promoted and aimed step by step for it by splitist forces in the island. It can be held that what is advocated by the leader of the Taiwan Authority is no more than the "two countries fallacy" as did Lee Teng-hui.

The advocacy of "virtual independence of Taiwan" had been hatched and come into being before the People's Progressive Party came to power, said Xu Bodong. When this was written into its Party's Programme it roused a strong opposition from among the broad masses of people in Taiwan. Forced by the situation it had to make an "alteration in form", hence the way of "persistence in the conception of 'Taiwan independence', while paying attention to the reality". He resorted to the means of "originality" and "main-body" as a camouflage. By means and ways of making "passport" of "Taiwan Republic", "national flag" and "national emblem" as such, he tried again and again to hawk his wares of "Taiwan Independence" by diminishing from the minds of the people the conception of China in the fields of history, culture, society and psychology, etc. And he has also left no stone unturned to remold the social psychology of the so-called "new Taiwan people" and "national conception". After he gained his political power he has strengthened his promotion of "substantial Taiwan independence" by using the power in his hands.
