U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has committed his country to helping Afghanistan to stabilize and providing aid for its reconstruction.
After having talks with leaders of the Afghan interim government during his brief visit to the country on Thursday, Powell promised at a press conference that funds frozen in the United States in connection of the Taliban rule would soon be made available to the new government, and Washington would pledge a " significant contribution" at the conference on the Afghan reconstruction to be held next Monday and Tuesday in Tokyo.
On his part, Hamid Karzai, prime minister of the Afghan interim government, promised to build up a banking system and government institutions so that his country could rejoin the world community as a "strong and stable member."
Trying to allay fears that any aid money given to rebuild the devastated country would go astray, Karzai vowed that his government would be "extremely tough" on corruption. He also claimed that the era of warlordism is over.
