Steps Against Extremism Help Present True Image of Pakistan: Musharraf

Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf said Wednesday the steps taken by the government to eradicate extremism and terrorism will help present Pakistan's true image of moderate and progressive Islamic state. Presiding over the meeting of the Federal Cabinet, the President said the action has been taken after consultation with Islamic scholars and leaders who fully support government's viewpoint to eliminate extremism and violence from the Pakistani society. He emphasized that whatever is being done is in the interest of Pakistan and to negate the propaganda of those who are trying to distort the image of Pakistan. The Cabinet meeting was informed that following the decision of the government so far, 1957 arrests have been made and 615 offices of the banned organizations sealed throughout the country. About Afghanistan, General Musharraf said everything is moving well according to the parameters visualized by Pakistan. "Pakistan desires demilitarization of Kabul. The presence of international peace keepers will bring ethnic harmony, stability and help carry out rehabilitation," he said. He said Pakistan and Afghanistan have unique historical, religious and cultural bonds and the two countries are following the policy of complete neutrality and non-interference in the affairs of each other. "It is for the Afghans to work together towards peace, rehabilitation and reconstruction," the president said. He particularly referred to his speech wherein he had offered a hand of sincere friendship to the Indian Prime Minister Atal Vajpayee. He said that Pakistan would move strongly on the diplomatic front on the issue of Kashmir and make every effort to focus the attention of international community and the media on the plight of the Kashmiri people. He said time has come that the international community must address the issue of Kashmir and help solve it in the interest of peace and progress for more than one billion people of this region.
