The 2002 Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Parade will feature a record number of International floats and performing groups and the largest number of national tourism organizations in its history, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) said Tuesday.
There will be 22 colorful floats and 38 performing groups taking part in the parade, half of which will be from overseas, it said.
To celebrate the year of horse, the parade will for the first time be led by two specially-trained horses and an elegant carriage which will be brought by the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
The parade, to be held on the first day of the Chinese New Year since 1996, is organized to embody Hong Kong's characteristics as a living fusion of East and West and promote Hong Kong's position as one of the leading tourist destinations in Asia.
Cathay Pacific Airways has been the parade's title sponsor for the fourth successive year. Its director and chief operating officer Philip Chen said the parade will play an important role in attracting more visitors to Hong Kong during the Lunar New Year period.
HKTB expected that Mainland visitors will be 30 percent higher in the month of Chinese new year than in other months.
