Eighteen Killed in Gas Explosion in Hunan Province

Eighteen coal miners were killed in a gas explosion at 21:42 pm Monday in a coal mine in Lengshuijiang City of Hunan Province, central China, a local official said Tuesday morning.

Eighteen coal miners were killed in a gas explosion at 21:42 pm Monday in a coal mine in Lengshuijiang City of Hunan Province, central China, a local official said Tuesday morning.

Liu Ruoliang, deputy director of the Zijiang Coal Mine, said the 18 miners were working underground when the explosion took place, and the remaining 12 workers survived.

Explosion under Investigation
Local police in Lengshuijiang City have started to investigate the cause of the fatal gas explosion.

By press time, provincial authorities, including Zhang Yunchuan, acting governor of Hunan, and deputy governor Zheng Maoqing, have led teams and hurried to Zijiang Coalmine, Lengshuijiang City, the site of the gas explosion, to organize the rescue work, said local sources.
