Answering reporters' questions following his New Year's Address, Monday, South Korean President Kim Dae-jung said he was determined to conduct thorough and transparent investigations into the back-to-back scandals involving high-ranking government officials.
Kim Dae-jung said he was shocked that high-level civil servants, people from the financial sector and even officials from Cheong Wa Dae were involved in corruption, and apologized to the people.
He added that he would oversee the setting up of an independent Special Prosecutors Office to deal with major scandals involving government officials and venture businesses.
In his address, the chief executive pledged to do all he can to revive the economy and successfully host the World Cup Finals during his remaining term in office, outlining key economic tasks for this, including boosting the competitiveness of Korean products, improving the quality of life for the country's middle class and stabilizing the nation's unemployment and inflation rates.
Kim Dae-jung also said he hoped to break the current deadlock in inter-Korean relations and US-North Korea contact.
He also promised to remain neutral in the upcoming local and presidential elections.
