U.S. President George W. Bush called the leaders of India and Pakistan on Sunday and both of them agreed to work to reduce tensions that have led to their largest military buildup ever, the White House said.
Bush thanked Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf for his speech on Saturday, in which he promised to crack down Islamic extremists and pledged that his country would not be used as a base for terrorism, White House national security council spokesman Sean McCormack said.
In a separate telephone call, Bush discussed Musharraf's speech with Indian Prime Minister Atal Vajpayee, McCormack said. He said both Indian and Pakistani leaders agreed to continue to work to reduce tensions.
The Indian government said earlier Sunday it welcomed Pakistan' s declared commitment to stop allowing its territory to be used for terrorism, but wants to see the statement translated into action.
