Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Thursday held talks with U.S. President George W. Bush on the current situation in the Middle East over phone.

During the phone conversation initiated by Bush, the two leaders discussed the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories and the outcome of a regional tour by U.S. Mideast peace envoy Anthony Zinni, the state-run MENA news agency reported.

The two leaders stressed that it is necessary to make further efforts to defuse tension between the Palestinians and Israelis and bring the two sides back to the negotiating table, the MENA said.

Their talks also dealt with U.S. measures to help Egypt face up to the ensuing economic problems in the fallout of the September 11 terror attacks on the United States, the agency added.
