US Criticizes Russia's Operations in Chechnya

The United States on Thursday criticized Russia's military operations in Chechnya as "a continuation of human rights violations" and urged a political solution to the conflict.
"The latest information on Russian operations in Chechnya indicates a continuation of human rights violations and the use of overwhelming force against civilian targets," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher told reporters.
He said the lack of a political solution and the number of credible reports of massive human rights violations contribute to an environment that is favorable towards terrorism.
The United States "would continue to urge both sides to seek a political solution to the war and urge accountability for human rights violations," he added.
