U.S President George W. Bush on Thursday assured India's home minister Lal K. Advani that he would urge Pakistan President Pevez Musharraf to take appropriate steps against extremists operating in and from Pakistan.

Bush did a drop-by during a White House meeting between Advani and Bush's national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said.

"The drop-by was designed to underscore the United States commitment to strong bilateral relations with India and work together to combat terrorism and all its manifestations," Fleischer told reporters.

"The president again expressed his outrage over the recent terrorist attacks in New Delhi and Srinagar," Fleischer said. "The president also stressed the importance of solving the Indo- Pakistan differences through diplomatic and political means."

"The president reminds all the region that the war there is against terrorism, not a war between India and Pakistan," he added.
