A major Chinese chicken processing company Thursday obtained an international quality certification on food safety, making a significant step forward tostrengthening its competitive edge in the global market.

Huadu Chicken Processing Company, which takes 80 percent of thelocal market share, is the first in Beijing to secure certification for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), a globally accepted system of food safety.

Statistics show that at present China's imports of meat products triple its exports.

Experts say that lack of international certification of food sanitation and safety hinders Chinese food businesses from participating in global competition.

Liu Qi, deputy general manager of Huadu, said that the HACCP certificate will help the company to tap the European and Americanmarkets after its successful entry into Japan, Switzerland and theMiddle East.

At present, less than 10 percent of China's 300 large meat producers have obtained international certificates.
