CDMA Network in Operation in Tibet

A CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) network has come into operation in west China's Tibet Autonomous Region, according to the China United Telecommunications Corp (China Unicom), the second largest telecommunications provider in China.

With an investment of 38.95 million yuan (about 4.87 million USdollars), the China Unicom Tibet branch has completed the first phase construction of the CDMA Tibetan network, and will provide service to 20,000 users.

The first phase of the network will cover Lhasa, Dagze county, Doilungdeqen county, Quxu county, Gonggar airport and areas along highways connecting Lhasa with the region's major counties.

An official with the local telecommunication administration said that the CDMA network operation in Tibet marks a development of the region's telecommunication industry.

China Unicom Tibetan branch was established in May 2001. The services they provided such as long-distance IP (Internet Protocol)calls and Unicom paging have been welcomed by local people.
