Senior Provincial Official Accused of Bribery, Embezzlement

A senior provincial official accused of taking huge bribes and embezzling public funds was brought to trial Tuesday in this capital of central China's Hunan Province.

A senior provincial official accused of taking huge bribes and embezzling public funds was brought to trial Tuesday in this capital of central China's Hunan Province.

Tan Zhaohua, 61, also president of a state-owned goods and materials company and of a state-owned building materials company, was charged with taking 1.29 million yuan (155,000 U.S. dollars) and 150,000 U.S. dollars in bribes between June 1997 and August 2000, according to the People's Procuratorate of Changsha.

He was also accused of collaborating with his son and two senior officials of the companies of embezzling 20 million yuan (2.4 million U.S. dollars) in public funds to use in stock trading.

All of the embezzled money has been retrieved and the profits from the stock trades have been confiscated, according to sources.
