People's Daily Editorial Calls for Measures to Raise Farmers' Income
The People's Daily carried an editorial Tuesday calling for solid measures to be taken to raise farmer's income. The editorial hailed the meeting on rural issues held January 6-7 in Beijing by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council as an indication that the party and government view agriculture as the foundation of the national economy.
In the editorial carried on Tuesday, People's Daily, the mouthpiece of the Communist Party of China, called for stronger measures to be taken to effective raise the income of the Chinese farmers.
It said that the meeting on rural issues held from January 6-7 reflects the strategic thinking of the Central Committee to stick to the fundamental position of agriculture.
Enhancing the purchasing power of farmers is an important part of the country's efforts to boost domestic demand, which is widely accepted as the key to ensure sustainable economic growth for China amid the global economic slowdown, it said.
Only when we raise farmers' income successfully, can we gain stronger momentum to boost domestic demand.
To leave no stone unturned to raise farmers' income, promote their purchasing ability is the focal task of agricultural work. Moreover, as farmers form the majority of the Chinese population, the issue of agriculture and farmer's income is not only an economic issue, but also a political matter that affects the stability of the whole country.
The editorial called for changes in the country's wealth distribution to enhance support for agricultural development, as well as adjustments in policies and practices to give more to and take less from farmers. It called on the cadres of different levels to make hard efforts with high sense of responsibility so as to further brisk up China's agricultural economy.
The Central Economic Working Conference, held from November 27 to 29, defined the readjustment of agricultural structure, deepening of rural reform and increasing farmers' income as major goals for 2002.
The conference said that to further change agricultural and rural economic set-ups is an important way for improving agricultural efficiency and boosting farmers' income. It is imperative to develop quality and special farm produce and expand animal husbandry into a more profitable industry as soon as possible.
Top priority should be given to the quality, sanitation and safety of food products, and efforts should be made to establish quality standards for farm produce, a system for examining and testing farm produce, and to develop organic and pollution-free food products.
