Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality will launch five programs for the next two years to control air pollution in its urban area.
According to Mayor Bao Xuding, the programs include closing down over some 600 stone-pits in the urban area, forbidding polluting vehicles and diesel-oil-fueled buses in key city zones, promoting the use of pollution-free coal, planting trees and grass, reconstructing, moving or closing down 12 large polluting enterprises in urban area.
Local government has earmarked some 380 million yuan (45.8 million U.S. dollars) in recent years in promoting clean energy. Latest statistics show that the city, formerly known as a "city of fog," only saw 30 days with fog in 2001. In the past, it was usually enveloped in fog for about 100 days each year.
