This east China metropolis recorded 4,500 US dollars in per capita gross domestic product (GDP) last year, placing first in the country.
This means that Shanghai has attained the level of a country with a moderate income, according to the municipal statistics bureau.
According to the sources, the city saw faster economic growth in 2001, and chalked up 495.1 billion yuan (about 59.65 billion U.S. dollars) in GDP, up 10.2 percent over the figure for the year 2000, at constant prices.
In 2000, the city recorded 4,180 US dollars in per capita GDP, the sources said.
They added that the service and industrial sectors are the two major factors behind the city's rapid economic growth.
