Electronic commerce, mobile telephony and telecommunication services will be three main drivers of the recovery of the Asia-Pacific IT market excluding Japan this year, according to market analyst firm International Data Corp. (IDC).

In a report released Friday detailing its main predictions for the Asia-Pacific market, IDC said telecommunication spending in Asia-Pacific is expected to be twice as high as IT spending. This year it will grow by 20.6 percent to reach 161 billion U.S. dollars, IDC said. Over the next four years it will continue to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 19 percent to be worth 269 billion dollars in 2005.

E-commerce will grow exponentially in Asia-Pacific, highlighting IT spending on enterprise portals, enhancing Web presence, Web-integration of key applications, and facilitating information access and exchange through mobile devices, according to IDC.

IDC said in the report that wireless web infrastructure will improve, with GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) co-existing with SMS (short messaging service). Expanded content and a more aggressive service provider push will help the wireless Internet vision move closer to reality in 2002.
