China is considering building a 36-kilometer bridge across the Hangzhou Bay in Zhejiang Province.

If constructed it will be the longest sea bridge in Asia and the second longest in the world.

The planned bridge is expected to cut the distance between Shanghai and Ningbo, a major deep-water port in east China, by 130 kilometers.

The building of the bridge will link up the Hangzhou Bay with the prosperous Yangtze River delta and boost the economic development of Zhejiang, analysts say.

The project is expected to cost over 10 billion yuan (1.2 billion U.S. dollars), the majority of which will be raised through bank loans and bond issue, with a small part provided by

the central government.
