Shanghai, China's leading industrial and commercial center, will spend a record 50 billion yuan (6 billion US dollars) this year on major construction projects, city officials say.

Major projects on plan include an elevated road, an undergroundtunnel across the Huangpujiang River, a light rail line, a 98-kilometer ring road and three expressway projects.

The city spent about 42 billion yuan on 43 major projects in 2001. Among them was the Shanghai Science and Technology Hall, oneof the venues for last October's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperationforum leaders' summit.
