A total of 284 people were killed in road accidents during the New Year holiday period, the Bangkok Post reported here Wednesday.
Health Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan was quoted as adding that from December 27 to December 31, 16,966 people were injured in traffic accidents around the country.
On average, there were 200 injuries and over three deaths every hour.
There were 1,000 injuries every day from road accidents, higher than in the same period of 2000. The worst day was December 30 with 5,935 injuries and 92 deaths, she said, noting that drunk driving was the biggest cause of injuries, accounting for 49 percent of the total number.
