Argentine Interim President Adolfo Rodriguez Saa Resigns

Argentina's interim President Adolfo Rodriguez Saa, of the ruling Peronist Party, tendered his "unavoidable" resignation on Sunday, due to the lack of political support to his week-long government, which was expected to be in office untill new presidential elections set for next March.

The resignation came just seven days after Rodriguez Saa took office following the downfall of Fernando de la Rua amidst widespread social unrest across the country, which left at least 27 people died and thousands of others injured.

Rodriguez Saa was named interim president by the Legislative Assembly on December 23.

The move also came after several powerful governors from the ruling Peronist Party boycotted a meeting to shore up support for his administration.

In a speech to the nation delivered from the San Luis city, Rodriguez Saa said he pretended in vain to "become the person who initiated the change" in Argentina. Rodriguez threatened earlier that he would tender resignation if he fails to obtain support from the ruling Peronist Party for his emergency plan which was aimed at curbing the current crisis in the country.

A new wave of violent protests erupted in the capital of Buenos Aires in the early hours of Saturday morning. The demonstrators voiced their reject to the financial policy and the formation of the week-long cabinet.
