China Strengthens Anti-Corruption Campaign in 2001

China has intensified high-level anti-corruption work in 2001. Li Jizhou, former deputy Public Security Minister, and Mu Suixin, Former mayor of Shenyang, were sentenced to death with reprieve. Crimes committed by Shi Zhaobin, former deputy secretary of the CPC Fujian Provincial Committee, Li Jiating, former Yunnan governor, Chong Fukui, former deputy governor of Hebei Province, etc, were also exposed.

  • March 10: China National Auditing Administration revealed that beginning from 2001 China will conduct post-leaving auditing on a trial basis among provincial leading cadres.


  • April 26: The Central Discipline Inspection Commission disclosed that Wang Leyi, deputy director of the General Customs Administration, had been expelled from the CPC,discharged from public employment and transferred to and dealt with by judicial organs according to law. Wang was accused of taking bribes worth 820,000 yuan (US$99,000) and seizing 630,000 yuan (US$76,000) worth of State and people's property.

  • September 24-26: The Sixth Plenum of the 15th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China was held in Beijing. The plenum passed the "Central Discipline Inspection Commission's Report on the Examination of the Case of Shi Zhaobin" and the"Central Discipline Inspection Commission's Report on the Examination of the Case of Li Jiating" and decided to dismiss Shi Zhaobin and Li Jiating from their posts as alternate members of the 15th CPC Central Committee, and expelled them from the Party.

  • December 5: Liu Zhibing, former member of the Standing Committee of Guangxi Regional CPC Committee and former executive vice-chairman of the people's government of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, was expelled from the Party and arrested by the Supreme People's Procuratorate according to law.
