China's Strike Against Crime Fruitful: State Councilor
China's strike against various criminal activities has proceeded smoothly and made remarkable achievements, said State Councilor Luo Gan, he also noted it is important not to be overly optimistic about the public security situation when delivering a report on improving public security to the plenary meeting of the ongoing 25th session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.
He told the legislators that public security departments at various levels have launched a series of actions to crack down on criminals and criminal gangs, especially those involved in organized crime.
---Corrupt officials rooted out
A number of corrupt governmental officials who have illicitly supported the crimes have been rooted out and sentenced, Luo said.
---Economic crimes cracked down
To regulate economic order, police and other governmental departments have joined hands to crack down on economic crimes, such as smuggling, making fake products, racketeering and tax evasion, he said.
---Crime cases decreased
Statistics show that between April and November of this year, the rate of criminal cases decreased by 44.7 percent compared with the same period last year.
However, the situation in some areas is not so satisfactory and greater efforts will be made to carry out the strike-hard campaign, Luo said.
China to Strike Hard Against Social, Economic Crimes Next Year
China's courts will continue its campaigns to "strike hard" against crimes and rectify market order next year, this will ensure a sound legal environment for China's economic development and social progress after the country's WTO entry.
In the first ten months of this year, courts throughout China have tried 162,822 criminal cases involving severe threats to public order, and 12,915 cases that seriously damaged market order, sentencing 210,779 and 15,945 criminals respectively. FULL STORY
