Hong Kong people are showing increased confidence in the political and economic prospects of the Chinese mainland, according to the latest survey conducted by the Hong Kong Policy Research Institute.

The survey, which is released Thursday, found that the confidence of Hong Kong people in political situation in the Chinese mainland and political relationship between the mainland and Hong Kong were 123.9 points and 121.9 points, moving up by 12. 7 percent and 5.6 percent respectively, compared with the figures of December 2000.
The index on political situation in the Chinese mainland stayed above the 100 points in most of the months in 2001, according to the Hong Kong Policy Research Institute, which conducts the survey on a monthly basis.
The trends of the indices on economic prospect of the Chinese mainland and the economic relations between the mainland and Hong Kong moved up gradually in 2001.
The index on economic prospect of the Chinese mainland climbed 11.5 percent to 125.9 points, while the index on economic relations between the mainland and Hong Kong rose 4.2 percent to 120.1 points in December 2001.
Following China's accession to the WTO, the index on economic prospect of the Chinese mainland reached the highest level of 126. 8 points in November 2001, since the survey was started in 1996.
The political and economic confidence indices were conducted by telephone surveys, with over 800 respondents aged between 18 and 64 interviewed in December 2001.
