State Councilor Wu Yi Thursday urged foreign trade and economic cooperation departments to do all they can to contribute to China's economic and social development in 2002.

China's foreign trade has maintained a relatively fast growth this year, despite the complicated political and economic situation in the world, Wu said at a national work conference on foreign trade and economic cooperation, which closed here Thursday.

However the foreign trade sector will face even more challenges next year as a result of the global economic downturn.

Foreign trade and economic cooperation departments throughout the country should work hard to ensure that next year's imports and exports will not be lower than the level of this year, she said.
