President Urges Faster Development of Information Technology

President Jiang Zemin has stressed that the wide application of information technology is an innovation in the field of science and technology, which is of profound and revolutionary importance.

Jiang Zemin, Chinese President and CPC General Secretary lately wrote a preface to the work of "China's Informationization: Exploration and Practice", entitled "Speed up China's Information Construction".

He points out that informationization is a technical innovative endeavor bringing us profound changes of things and life. With informationization developed as an intelligent tool our productivity will be greatly raised and a new accompanying leap will be achieved in productive forces. For our part, positive efforts are indispensable.

We must make sure that industrialization with informationization be well integrated, developed and raised to a level: informationization with information technology as an intelligent tool is developed and with these industry is well equipped and economy strengthened so that the country's competitive edge is raised and economic leapfrog achieved.

President Jiang points out that material, energy and information form the three pillar resources contributing to China's advancement. Underlining these are information resources and this has all the more been stressed for a rapid development of information technology and new social advances made.

A major problem affecting world economic development is a universal shortage of resources, pointing to the strategic importance and maximum use of information resources for a sound sustained growth of the world economy and a cut amount of energy and resources to be used per GDP-unit. Electronic information technology used to a multiple purpose will help in a raise of the efficiency of the national economy and less energy to be used.

This is as in the way iron and steel, coal, electricity and oil resources are used to advance China's economy, calling in place for down-to-earth strategies, countermeasures and policies to be formulated governing the development and use of information resources.

Jiang Zemin points out that in the course of upgrading China's socioeconomic informationization spread of knowledge of informationization among the whole Chinese people is essential when ability is raised. Education on the basic knowledge of informationization, use and study of information technology must be conducted among the broad masses of cadres and employees. To be in brief, through information construction the whole Chinese nation should be enabled to achieve a qualitative raise in their knowledge of science and culture.

"China Informationization: Exploration and Practice" is authored by Hu Qili, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
