The following are top ten domestic news events of the year 2001 selected by Xinhua News Agency. The top ten domestic news includes those cocerning the important issues and events in politics, economy, sci-tech, sports, etc.
On July 1, CPC Central Committee General Secretary Jiang Zemin in his keynote speech at a grand gathering marking the 80th founding anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC), called for improved Party building in accordance with the requirements of "Three Represents".
The "Three Represents", which calls for the CPC to represent the development trend of China's advanced social productive forces, the orientation of China's advanced culture, and the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the people in China, is the guiding principle that leads the Party building in this new era of history.

2. Good Start for 10th Five-Year Plan
Despite a global economic downturn, China's gross domestic product in 2001 totaled 9,645 billion yuan (1,162 billion U.S. dollars), 7.4 percent up from last year and a good start for the Tenth Five-Year Plan (2001-2005).
The Sixth Plenum of the 15th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, held in Beijing on September 24-26, called for sustained efforts to strengthen and improve the building of Party style, clean up the government and combat corruption.
The CPC punished several corrupt officials during the year, as a concrete move to strengthen the Party building.
The CPC Central Committee issued an outline of ethics building for citizens, a major move called for by Chinese President Jiang Zemin to "rule the country by a combination of law and morality" and to promote the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
On February 19, the Chinese government awarded a group of scientists for their outstanding contributions to the country's economic developments and social progress.
Wu Wenjun, a Chinese mathematician, and Yuan Longping, a leading hybrid-rice expert, won the five-million-yuan State Supreme Science and Technology Award for the year 2000.
On January 23, the eve of the Chinese New Year, believing the evil fallacies of Li Hongzhi, leader of the Falun Gong cult, five Falun Gong followers set themselves on fire in Tian'anmen Square in downtown Beijing.
The event further revealed the inhumane, anarchic and unscientific nature of the Falun Gong cult.
On April 23, PT Shuixian (Narcissus) became the first listed company ever to be delisted from China's stock market. It is followed by several more PT companies.
Towards the end of the year, a new delisting system was adopted by the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), which put an end to the practice of particular treatment (PT).
China injected 300 billion yuan (36 billion U.S. dollars) this year to foster major projects designed to boost development of the western region, including the transfer of gas and electricity from west to east.
