No dealings with DPP if it sticks to "Taiwan Independence"
The mainland side will not have any contact with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of Taiwan if it does not give up its "Taiwan independence" platform, Zhang Mingqing, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said Wednesday.

Zhang made the remark at a press conference here in response to a Taiwan press report saying that the mainland will adjust its policy towards the DPP after Taiwan's elections.

He said that the report is inconsistent with the facts, for the mainland side has always held that it will have no dealings with the DPP before the DPP gives up its "Taiwan independence" platform.

Amendments of "Constitution" only to get powers
Asked to comment on the DPP's plan to revise the "Constitution", Zhang noted that Lee Teng-hui had made six amendments only to get more powers into his own hands.

"We will closely follow the DPP's plan to see if it is revising the 'constitution' to move towards 'Taiwan Independence'," he said.

Zhang said that by attempting to put the word "Taiwan" onto the passport, the leader of Taiwan is trying to materialize the " Taiwan independence" concept.

The spokesman stressed that the mainland side will keep close watch on and stay on alert against the move.
