Beijing Fixes Timetable for Olympic Games Preparation
The complete set of preparatory work for Beijing 2008 Olympic Gameswill be handled in three phases in the seven years to come. The first phase covers a period from October 2001 to the first half of the year 2003. The second phase, from the second half of the year 2003 to the first half of 2006, is the stage for full-scale construction. The third phase refers to that extending from the second half of the year 2006 up to the very moment prior to the opening of the 2008 Olympic Games.
The first phase refers to the preparation work at the initial stage, covering a period from October 2001 to the first half of the year 2003. The main tasks at this stage include drawing up and implementing the "Olympic Games Action Plan", improving organizing and leading bodies, fully ensuring the available capital for the construction of stadiums and gyms to bring to finish the preparatory work by quickening infrastructure construction and installation of facilities for environmental protection.
Second Half of 2003 to First Half of 2006
The second phase, from the second half of the year 2003 to the first half of 2006, is the stage for full-scale construction. The construction work of stadiums and gyms for the Olympic Games will be brought into full swing with the preparatory work to be put by and large under an orderly operation.
Second Half of 2006 to 2008
The third phase, the improving and running stage, refers to that extending from the second half of the year 2006 up to the very moment prior to the opening of the 2008 Olympic Games. Exams, adjustments, tests and trial running on all the items and preparatory work will have to be executed and operated during this period.
Necessary adjustment of the program for the Olympic Games facilities will be carried out next year so as to interpret better the guiding thought of "speeding up development by Olympic Games and promoting Olympic Games with development".
Five months after its high-flying bidding success, Beijing got down to earth to prepare for a best ever sporting gala by setting up the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 29th Olympic Games (BOCOG) on Thursday.
Beijing was awarded the top sporting prize in Moscow on July 13 by beating the other four candidate cities including Paris, Toronto, Istanbul and Osaka.
Concurring with the launch of the organizing committee is a Supervision Committee which Liu said is set up to ensure the transparency and fairness during the Olympic preparation.
