Wei Jianxing Meets Libyan Congress Speaker

Wei Jianxing, member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met Saturday in Sirte with Zinati Mohmmed Al Zinati, speaker of the General People's Congress of Libya (GPCL).

During the meeting, Wei said that as the highest power organ of Libya and a national political organization, the GPCL plays an active role in protecting national stability and promoting economic development.

Wei noted the relationship between the CPC and the GPCL has developed smoothly since 1989 when it was first set up, which is of great importance in promoting mutual understanding of the two peoples as well as the development of bilateral relations of the two countries.

The CPC is willing to consolidate exchanges and cooperation with the GPCL and promote the stable development of bilateral relations, he added.

Regarding the Sino-African relations, Wei said that the CPC and the Chinese government pay special attention to further reinforcing friendship and cooperation with African countries under new situation, implement the four proposals put forward by Chinese

President Jiang Zemin at the China-Africa Cooperative Forum, and support African countries to choose social systems and ways of development that suit their own national conditions.

For his part, Zinati said that as a great country in both Asia and the world, China has, for many years, supported the righteous fight of African countries and other developing countries in protecting national independence and sovereignty.

Libya and China have common or similar stance and views on many significant international issues, he said, adding the friendly relationship between the two countries has a solid foundation and a bright future.

He stressed that the Libyan people are proud to have China as a friend and maintaining high-level exchanges and frequent exchange of views on issues of common concern are conducive to further consolidation and development of friendly bilateral cooperation.

During the meeting, Wei Jianxing also introduced to Zinati China's basic views on the current international situation.

Wei, head of the CPC delegation, arrived in Sirte on Friday evening after a friendly visit to Greece.
