The leaders of Canada, Mexico and the United States issued a joint statement on Friday to urge Argentine leaders to work out a plan that leads the country out of a crippling economic crisis.

The statement, released by the White House one day after Argentine President Fernando de la Rua resigned following riots that claimed 25 lives amid a failing economy.

"Argentina is our neighbor and friend and we have witnessed recent events with compassion and concern," U.S. President George W. Bush, Mexican President Vicente Fox and Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien said in the statement.

"We hope that all Argentines can come together to find a solution that leads the country back to sustainable growth and prosperity," the statement said.

"We applaud the great strength displayed by Argentina's institutions through this period, and reiterate our confidence in the country's standing as one of the Western Hemisphere's leading democracies," the statement said.
