Shenzhen City, a special economic zone in south China, will build a new and hi-tech industry belt to promote the development of advanced technologies, the city's mayor said Thursday.
The city set up a 11.5-square-kilometer new and hi-tech industry park in 1996, which is one of the country's six state-level parks of the kind.
Aiming for faster development of new and hi-tech industries, the city decided to build the belt, which is designed to be 100 kilometers long, including 9 new and hi-tech industry sections, one university zone and one ecological farming zone.
The belt will feature five pillar industries of electronics andinformation, photoelectric integration, biological engineering, new materials and ecological agriculture.
The total industrial value within the belt is expected to reach200 billion yuan (24 billion U.S. dollars) in 2005. By 2010 the figure will be doubled to 400 billion yuan (48 billion U.S. dollars), or equal to that of city's current total industrial value, according to sources.
