Special Administrative Region Tung Chee Hwa.
Qian spoke highly of Tung's performance as first chief executive of HKSAR in the past four-plus years, during which the HKSAR government has successfully implemented the "One Country, Two Systems" policy and maintained prosperity and stability in Hong Kong.
Tung has led the HKSAR government to effectively protect the rights and freedom of HKSAR residents, and guarantee the authorityand principle of the Basic Law of the region, Qian said.
Qian said that that during the period, Hong Kong has also successfully overcome the difficulties brought by the Asian financial crisis. Facts have shown that the thesis made by Deng Xiaoping that Hong Kong can be administered well by the people of Hong Kong is correct, Qian stated.
Qian told Tung that China is now enjoying a good political and economic situation and the Chinese central government is considering to take a number of measures to support Hong Kong economically to help it overcome its economic difficulties. He believed that Hong Kong would get over the difficulties brought about by the Asian Crisis and the sluggish global economy.
