China Sets Up Another Telecom Giant

A new telecommunications giant, China Satellite Communications Corporation (China Satcom), was officially set up Wednesday in Beijing. The telecom giant is expected to run such businesses as telecommunications, broadcasting and mobile satellite telecommunication service, satellite-based voice, data and multi-media telecommunications service, domestic VSAT service, and other services authorized by the government.

A new telecommunications giant, China Satellite Communications Corporation (China Satcom), was officially set up Wednesday in Beijing.

Wu Jichuan, Minister of Information Industry attended an opening ceremony.

The corporation is based on the merging of a number of satellite-based telecom companies, such as China Telecommunications Broadcast Satellite Corporation, China Orient Telecom Satellite Co. Ltd., China Space Mobile Satellite Telecommunications Co. Ltd and ChinaSat of China Telecom (Hong Kong).

The telecom giant is expected to run such businesses as telecommunications, broadcasting and mobile satellite telecommunication service, satellite-based voice, data and multi-media telecommunications service, domestic VSAT service, and other services authorized by the government.

China Satcom plans to provide general network service, broadband access service, IP basic service and IP value-added service in one or two years.

The corporation is capable of providing multiple information services to less-developed mountain and desert areas.
