Railways Expect 130 Million Passengers During Coming Spring Season
China's railway transportation's annual peak season, which sees tens of millions of people travel across the country to return home for the traditional Spring Festival, is expected to hit 130 million passengers. The ministry has worked out a viable transport plan to ensure safe and fast transport services during the period.
The coming spring season to see millions of people travel
China's railway transportation's annual peak season, which sees tens of millions of people travel across the country to return home for the traditional Spring Festival, is expected to hit an all-time high 130 million passengers.
The coming spring season for the railways will start on January 28 and end on March 8, according to the Ministry of Railways.
The "Spring Season Transport", as it is usually called, includes floods of transient laborers and college students returning home during their winter vacation.
In addition, in recent years an increasing number of other people have traveled during the Spring Festival period.
Railway sector to make efforts to ensure traffic smooth
Due to the large number of travelers during this period, China's transport system, chiefly the railway sector, works especially hard to ensure that "traffic" runs smoothly.
The ministry predicts that during the 2002 40-day peak season, the railway sector will have to handle 130 million passengers, 3.17 million more than last year's figure, averaging 3.25 million per day.
The ministry has worked out a viable transport plan to ensure safe and fast transport services during the period, according to Liu Zhijun, vice minister of the Ministry of Railways.
China's transportation during the spring season
China's transport departments predicted that during the 40-day period, the passenger transport volume will reach 130 million arrivals and departures.
Information from the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China predicts that a total of 7.3 million passengers are to travel by plane during the period, up 3.3 percent on an annual basis.
The sector will add temporary flights when necessary. Air China, for instance, has arranged 769 additional and charted flights. China Southern Airlines will provide 1,412 additional flights.
China's highways and waterways are expected to carry 1.49 billion passengers and 29 million passengers, respectively, in the period.
The railway passenger transport volume will reach 130 million passengers, up five percent. The Ministry of Railways will offer more additional passenger trains than last year, and tighten control over nation-wide ticket sales.
China's public security and traffic administrative departments will enhance supervision and examination over drivers and vehicles engaged in long-distance transportation.
