China's Telecom Revenue to Reach 1 Trillion Yuan in 2005

China's telecom industry is scheduled to reap a revenue of RMB 1 trillion in communication services by 2005 and complete a reliable information network by 2010, Wu Jichuan, Minister of the Information Industry lately revealed in his speech.

China's telecom industry is scheduled to reap a revenue of RMB 1 trillion in communication services by 2005 and complete a reliable information network by 2010, Wu Jichuan, Minister of the Information Industry lately revealed in his speech.

With market as orientation
According to Wu, to realize a striking development of the information industry, we must keep up with the world-advanced technologies and break with the convention and take a reasonable step forward so as to optimize the structure. And on the basis of a sizable economic efficiency we are going to set up a well-grounded market of paying attention to quality and with market as its orientation.

Strategy for next ten years
The strategy of China's telecommunication industry for next ten years is given as follows:

1. To reach a revenue of one trillion yuan in communication business by 2005, of which some 80 billion yuan from the post sector, 920 billion yuan from the telecom sector, with an average increase of 23 percent in the coming five years;

2. To have the world biggest scale and capacity of fixed and mobile phone nets, with the number of phone users to reach 500 million and realize the village - village phone communication;

3. To raise the number of data-, multimedia- and Internet-users to some 200 million persons, with the Internet surfer population to reach some 15 percent of all.

Further Goals
By 2010, China will establish an information-resourceful communication network that can transfer gigantic data at a high speed by narrow-band or broadband, wire or wireless ways at any time in most regions throughout the country, Wu added.

Telecom Revenue Climbs in 1st Quarter
Telecom industry revenue has reached 78.64 billion yuan (US$9.5 billion) in the first quarter, up 18.1 percent over the same period last year.

China Telecom, the country's largest telecom firm, takes a lion's share of the revenue with 42.5 billion yuan (US$5.1 billion). Revenue of China Mobile reaches 29.39 billion yuan (US$3.6 billion), with that of China Unicom at 6.48 billion yuan (US$783.5 million).

The bulk of revenue increase comes from mobile and Internet services. During the first quarter, China has added 15 million mobile phone users and 1.68 million Internet users. At present, mobile users number 100 million, with 10.2 million Internet users.
