The United States on Monday urged all its citizens in Haiti to remain indoors following an apparent attempted coup against President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

Armed commandos stormed the National Palace in Port-au-Prince early Monday morning, taking over radio communications and killing at least two policemen and two civilians before police recaptured the building.

White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said the U.S. ambassador to Haiti reported to the White House that "all members of the U.S. mission in Haiti are safe and accounted for."

The ambassador requested additional police protection for the embassy and U.S. consulate, and the government of Haiti responded quickly to that request, Fleischer said.

Due to the unrest, "the embassy is closed to the public today following the attack, and the United States urges all citizens in Haiti to remain in their homes today."
