Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), met Monday with a Vietnamese delegation headed by Pham The Duyet, chairman of the Presidium of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee.

Li said the Chinese and Vietnamese people have forged a deep friendship during the anti-imperialist aggression and struggles for national independence, stressing that since the normalization of bilateral ties, the good-neighborly and comprehensive cooperative relations between the two have been advanced substantially.

He noted that in February 1999, the top leaders of the Chinese and Vietnamese communist parties defined the framework and development direction for bilateral relations in keeping with the 21st century, which has elevated bilateral ties to a new stage. Recently, Nong Duc Manh, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), made a successful visit to China, which has also promoted comprehensive friendly and cooperative relations.

Li pointed out that under the current situation, the two sides should adopt specific measures at various levels to deepen bilateral ties.

The CPPCC chairman also said the CPPCC and the VFF play a similar role in uniting people from various walks to play their role in politics.

He said in recent years, relations between the CPPCC and the VFF have become closer, thus promoting mutual understanding and trust as well as cooperation between the two.

He believes that Pham' current visit will further the exchange and cooperation between the CPPCC and the VFF and promote the good-neighborly relations between China and Vietnam.

Pham The Duyet, for his part, said he was glad to see the Vietnam-China relationship has become increasingly smooth, that China has made remarkable achievements in construction and in the improvement in the people's standard of living.

He said the VFF will further enhance its ties with the CPPCC and continuously promote Vietnam-China relations.

Present at the meeting were Luo Haocai, vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, Zheng Wantong, secretary-general of the CPPCC National Committee, and others.

The Vietnamese guests are here at the invitation of the CPPCC.
