The former Albanian President Sali Berisha was re-elected leader of the Democratic Party of Albania, the country's largest opposition party.

Berisha won his re-election Sunday with an overwhelming majority of 642-31 at a national congress session of his party. An 81-member national council was also elected at the meeting.

The two-day session also authorized the party's top decision-making body to decide whether the party would return to parliament.

The Democratic Party began a boycott of parliament in Septemberto protest what they claimed Socialist rigging in June elections.

Berisha has led the Democratic Party since his resignation as state president in 1997 after the collapse of a nationwide pyramid investment scheme.
