A former personal guard of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was found in a boatpeople detention center in Australia.

It was released Monday by Ross Cameron, a parliament member, to the TV station Channel Seven.

According to Cameron, the man destroyed his papers and arrived by boat. "After thorough search and investigations he was found to be on the personal guard of Saddam Hussein in Iraq," he said.

He claimed that the discovery highlighted the need for thorough criminal checks of all asylum seekers.

The Howard government's tough stance against boatpeople was supported by the majority of the Australian citizens, and one of the reasons behind it was fear for terrorists infiltrating into the country.

Cameron said one of the terrorists involved in the September attacks in the United States was an asylum seeker.

But Opposition Labor Party believed the government should be concentrating on airport security.
