Eleven coal miners were killed Wednesday by a gas explosion at an unlicensed small mine in central China's
Hunan
Province.
The 11 miners were all underground when the explosion occurred at the Lianyi Coal Mine in Anping town, Lianyuan City, at about 1: 40 p.m., Xinhua learned Friday.
The fire which resulted from the explosion was brought under control 40 minutes later.
The accident came two months after Lianyuan officials were criticized at an industrial safety meeting held by the provincial government for being slow in shutting down unlicensed coal mines, local sources said.
