Two firms in east China's Shandong Province were ordered by a court in this capital of Jiangsu Province Friday to pay 5.6 million yuan (over 670,000 U.S.dollars) to 97 farmers for polluting their fish farm.

Jinyimeng Company and Linshu Chemical Factory were found responsible for two accidents in September 1999 and June 2000, respectively, which caused massive deaths among fish the 97 farmers raised in the Shilianghe Reservoir, downstream from Lianyungang City, in neighboring Jiangsu.

An investigation by the intermediate people's court of Lianyungang City showed that untreated waste water was discharged by the two companies into the reservoir when a flood control valveupstream was opened on the said two dates.

Xinhua reporters found that the reservoir, once the source of drinking water for Lianyungang City, is so polluted that water in part of it is unfit for both drinking and irrigation.

The two companies have stated intention of appealing to a higher court.
