Chinese Olympic Committee Promises Athlete-centered Games in 2008
Beijing will do its best to satisfy all the Olympians by ensuring a "scientific and compact" competition plan for the 2008 Olympic Games, a senior sports official said Thursday.
Beijing will do its best to satisfy all the Olympians by ensuring a "scientific and compact" competition plan for the 2008 Olympic Games, a senior sports official said Thursday.
Yuan Weimin, president of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC), made the remarks when the 2008 Olympic Games Organizing Committee was set up here today, five months after the Chinese capital won the right to host the Olympics.
"A scientific and compact competition plan will be a significant factor in a successful Olympic Games," said Yuan.
He said that during the coming seven-year buildup to the Olympic Games, the COC will learn from Olympic hosts such as Sydney (2000), Athens (2004), Salt Lake City (2002) and Turin (2006) in organizing competitions, receive guidance from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Federations (IF), and actively participate in the competition organization of world multi-sports events and world championships.
"In this way we will spot and churn out a group of qualified staff who are well versed in organizing competitions and familiar with the Olympic affairs," said Yuan.
"And the recruitment of the staff will be open to the world," he added.
After all the Olympic venues are put in place by the end of 2006, China will organize a series of test events to ensure the Olympic preparation will be "faultless", Yuan said.
"We have committed ourselves on many occasions to put on a games which will satisfy the athletes, satisfy the IOC, IFs and National Olympic Committees, and satisfy the world media," he said.
