Unite with Religious Believers in Endeavor to Build Socialism the Chinese Way

Today, People's Daily publishes the editorial entitled "Closely Uniting with Religious Believers in the Joint Effort for the Great Cause of Building Socialism with Chinese Characteristics".

The editorial points out that between December 10 and 12, the National Religious Working Conference was held in Beijing by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Council. Taking Deng Xiaoping Theory and the Party's basic line as the guide and complying with the requirements of the "three represents", the conference reviewed and summarized the achievements and experiences gained in religious work, studied and analyzed the new situations, new conditions and new problems confronting the religious work and further enhanced the entire Party's understanding of the importance of religious work, unified thinking and set forth clear tasks, giving full expressions to the high attention paid by the Party Central Committee and the State Council to religious work. This conference will definitely produce important and far-reaching influence on the religious work of the Party and State in the new century.

The editorial stresses that the basic tasks for the religious work in the early new century are: comprehensively implementing the Party's policy on the freedom of religious beliefs, administering religious affairs according to law, actively guiding religions to adapt themselves to the socialist society, persisting in the principle of independent administration, consolidating and developing the patriotic united front of the Party with the religious circle, maintaining stability and enhancing unity, and exerting ourselves to promote the socialist modernization drive, realize the complete reunification of the motherland, and defend world peace and boost common development.

The editorial says in conclusion that strengthening Party leadership over the religious work is a fundamental guarantee for doing religious work well in the early new century. Party committees and governments at all levels should conscientiously study and implement the spirit of the National Religious Working Conference, further enhance their understanding of the protracted nature and complexity of the religious problem and the importance of doing religious work well, they should persistently take Deng Xiaoping Theory and the important thinking of the "three represents" as the guide, firmly establish a Marxist outlook on religion, unswervingly implement the Party's policy on religion, they should diligently study new knowledge and new situations and solve new problems; they should strive to understand and grasp the law of religion itself, closely unite with the religious believers in the common effort for the great cause of building socialism with Chinese characteristics, thereby constantly opening up new phase in the religious work.
