Qingdao Becomes One of China's Biggest Ports

A senior manager of East China's leading port of Qingdao said Wednesday the port exceeded the 100 million-ton mark in volume of goods handled so far this year, making it one of the most active ports in China.

Handled 100.08 million tons of goods this year

A senior manager of East China's leading port of Qingdao said Wednesday the port exceeded the 100 million-ton mark in volume of goods handled so far this year, making it one of the most active ports in China.

By 6 p.m. Tuesday, the port had handled 100.08 million tons of goods so far this year, with nearly 70 percent of the goods were either imported products or Chinese products for export.

China's second-largest port in terms of foreign trade

This kept Qingdao Port as the country's second-largest port in terms of foreign trade, the port manager said. China's other leading ports include ports in Shanghai and Ningbo in the east, Guangzhou in the south and Tianjin in the north.

Ranking third in container handling among the major ports in China

The port has also handled 2.53 million standard containers thisyear, ranking third among the major ports in China. It is expectedto top 2.6 million containers by the end of this year.

Geographic Location and Climate

Qingdao is located at the tip of Shandong Peninsula (E 120��22��, N 36��4��), with the Yellow Sea to the east and south, and the mainland to the west and north. Qingdao covers an area of 10654sq km. The climate is temperate semi-humid continental and the area is a well-known summer resort. The average summer and winter temperatures are 25��C and 1.3��C respectively.

Qingdao Port is one of China��s major trading ports and one of the top fifteen hundred-million-ton ports in the world. The port consists of docks for containers, ore, petroleum and coal. The annual cargo handling capacity in 2000 exceeded 86 million tons and 2.1 million TEUs.
