Official newspaper The New Light of Myanmar Wednesday hailed the forthcoming visit of Chinese President Jiang Zemin to Myanmar, saying his visit will further strengthen the existing friendly relations between the two countries and enhance cooperation in various fields.
President Jiang is due to arrive here later Wednesday on a four-day state visit to the country at the invitation of Chairman of the Myanmar State Peace and Development Council Senior-General Than Shwe.
The paper said in its editorial that the visit of the Chinese president will benefit the peoples of the two countries, and that "Bright prospects lie ahead in all fields for mutual benefits."
The editorial noted that the People's Republic of China and the Union of Myanmar have maintained their long-standing friendly relations for many years.
"The close friendship and frequent visits between the high-level leaders have dynamically accelerated the development of greater Sino-Myanmar friendship," it said, citing the nine visits to Myanmar by late Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai and the 12 visits to China by former Myanmar President U Ne Win.
It emphasized that the successive leadership of the two nations have been able to maintain and further enhance the Myanmar-China friendship founded and fostered by the leaders of earlier generations.
The paper also recalled that the leaders of the two nations were able to lay down important agreements. Among them, it said, the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence remain until today one of the cardinal principles adhered to in international relations.
